The FishPod 5X works great for Ice Fishing- Here are some tips to get you reeling them in!
1. Place the FishPod in Ice Fishing Mode under Settings>Mode(You will see it at the bottom of the screen)- This tells the FishPod to ignore the first 4 feet in the water column which will help prevent sonar bounce back from inside the hole.
2. Place the FishPod against the side of the hole in the ice. The sonar can bounce off the walls of the ice depending on thickness and give erratic readings if not close or against one side. In the image below the ice was 36" thick and we were able to get accurate jig and fish readings.
3. You can clearly see the jig being displayed as the solid line just off the bottom, when we saw fish come into the sonar beam we adjusted jig height accordingly. Lots of fish activity that day! You will also notice the depth reading is not being displayed but the bottom is clearly seen. Our algorithm mutes the depth readout when ice fishing so it does not show erratic readings from bouncing off the sides of the ice. We highly recommend using the Range in manual mode to dial in the readout rather than auto for this very reason. Also Using BottomScan, Fish Echo and Surface Clarity settings to get rid of any clutter and dial in your jig.
