The most important thing to keep in mind is that transducers can only be glued inside hulls that are SOLID fiberglass or up to 1/8th” aluminum. Fiberglass hulls are often reinforced in places for added strength or to reduce weight. These cored areas contain balsa wood or structural foam which will not conduct sound. Do not locate the transducer over coring.
Hulls That Are Not Compatible Include:
- Wood Hulls
- Cored Hulls
- Fiberglass Hulls Over 1" Thick
- Aluminum Hulls over 1/8th Thick
A Special Note About Sail Boats:
- While we have many sailboats that have successful glue-in installations, we definitely see the most customers' having difficulty with their installations due to:
- hull thickness, especially around the keel.
- limited installation space due to the keel
- fiberglass voids and/or unsaturated
- When we have customers ask what type of transducer we recommend for a sailboat, we always tell them a thru-hull is by far the best application for most sailboats. You can exchange your transducer by clicking here.
Performance Considerations
Since the hull absorbs acoustic energy, transmitting through the hull reduces the transducer’s performance.
